TLV320AIC3206 Headphone amplifier dynamic volume control

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3206

Hi TI,

The application note for the TLV320AIC3206 states that the DAC digital volume control and the headphone amplifiers should not be dynamically controlled.

Can you tell me why you say they are not "meant" to be used this way?

What can we expect if we do?

BR,

Colin

  • Hi Colin,

Welcome to E2E and thank you for your interest in our products.

The volume controls are instantaneous. DAC digital volume control and the headphone amplifiers are not used dynamically since it is a fairly large step. So it is suggested to use them only during initial device configuration or use them in small steps as the note mentions:

"If the headphone amplifier must be placed into 'mute' from the –6.0dB setting, set the device at a gain of –5.0dB first, then place the device into mute".

It's a best practice to follow this recommendations to ensure the better performance.

I hope this helps you. If you still have questions, please let me know.

    Best regards,

    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.

  • Hi Luis,

    Thanks for the information.

So the reason I should avoid dynamic control here is because of step size?

Are there any other possible side affects of using the digital volume control dynamically assuming I don't care that it is instantaneous or about the step size?

    BR,

    Colin

  • Hi Colin,

Yes, it is. It is recommended to avoid the dynamic control because a pop may result. Specially when the headphone outputs are configured as differential.

I hope this helps you, if you still have questions, please let me know.
