tpa6404 bypass cap

hi ,

my customer uses a 1 M resistor instead of a bypass cap, below is the comments:

we know that on the data sheet, a capacitor must be fitted here, unfortunately, a resistor with 1 Meg due to a wrong manufacturing process.

Our question is if you can estimate the effect of wrongly tipped component based on your internal detailed documentation. According to the information that we gather from the data sheet it is at the bypass pin to bias the input to half the supply voltage. In our opinion, the capacitor serves as a back-up capacitor for exactly this voltage. According to the datasheet, the cap can be omitted when a differential signal is on the input. Adding a 1 M resistor at the bypass pin wihtout cap ,how the 2.1uA current will flow? In our opinion, the wrong insertion of the resistors will not affect the signal when a diff signal is on the input of the amplifer. We can unfortunately not say with certainty, because the datasheet gives no indication of the internal wiring of the bypass pin. For us, as well as our customers, this is extremely important, as our customer needs to know if he can avoid the immense costs of rework. regards, kamal

  • Hi Kamal,

As you said, the bypass capacitor is optional and not required in differential input applications. If bypass capacitor is not used this will slightly worsen power supply rejection ratio but there should be no problem.
Bypass pin is used to decouple the voltage from a resistor divider to get the mid-supply voltage. If another resistor is paralleled with the resistor divider it may change the mid-supply voltage, but as this 1M resistor is much bigger than internal resistor (in the order of 50K/100K) the variation of mid-supply voltage will be minimal.
So there shouldn't be problem if the 1M resistor remains there, although is not recommended to pull down this pin and we have not tried a configuration like this.
You can also try to remove the 1M resistor to see if there are great changes in its operation.
