About peak setting of TAS5766M (Learning board)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5766M

Please let me know about two point below of setting.

・About peak excursion limit in "SOA" tab, which setting (below①②) is correct?

 ①The speaker rating:15W

(I think that the spec which is usually submitted from a manufacturer is this.)

②The peak output power at Vcc=18.5 [V] @6ohm (about 28W)

・About Watt cont.(Thermal Limit) in "SOA" tab, It's different from a usual amplifier and even if peak output is applied,

is there an explanation for the mechanism that a loudspeaker doesn't break?

For example, please see attached below.

 ※Input to 1kHz sine wave → 150ms peak power  → 250ms no signal → Re-input 150ms peak power →・・・

Inputting the signal which repeats the above, and when keeping putting peak output in,

can it be said that it doesn't break down?

Best regards,

Satoshi

  • Hi, Satoshi-san,

Please review the app note, "PurePath™ Smart Amp User Manual (TAS5766M/68M)" located in www.ti.com/mysecuresoftware in the TAS5766M area.

  • Dear Don Dapkus-san

    Thank you for reply.

・About peak excursion limit, ["PurePath™ Smart Amp User Manual]'s answer is ②The peak output power.
but slaa627a's answer is ①The speaker rating.
    Which is correct?

・About Watt cont, additional information is below.
When no signal time is less than 250ms, re-input peak power is less than 150ms.

    Best regards,
    Satoshi
  • Satoshi-san,

Power handling (speaker rating) is a stress test performed by speaker manufacturer using pink noise.

Our thermal characterization relates temperature to steady state power. For example, a 5W tone may heat the voice coil to 100degC after 20 minutes.

The speaker can be damaged by voice coil or magnet temperature exceeding temp ratings or over-excursion. Instantaneous power does not damage the speaker in itself.
