PCM2906C external clock

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM2906C, PCM2902C, PCM2903C, PCM2900C

Hi,

I'm thinking about using a PCM2906C for a new project that needs to acquire two audio signals and transfer them to a computer, whith a very stable/precise clock, and therefore need to use an external clock.

After reading the datasheets of the PCM29xx family i noticed that ONLY the PCM2906C's datasheet contains the comment " use of the external clock is not recommended" (p.21).

Is there any clock architecture differecences in the PCM29xx family? and do you know why this comment?

Thank you very much,

Yann Mossier

  • Hi Yann,

Welcome to E2E and thank you for your interest in our products!

There is no difference in clock architecture, this comment is also in PCM2900C/PCM2902C D/S but it seems to be missing on PCM2903C D/S.
What the D/S is trying to explain is that it is unhealthy to disable the external clock source when the device is powered on. Keeping the clock source enabled the entire time is the correct thing to do. It is disabling the clock source when the device is powered on that is not recommended.
I hope this can solve your doubts. Let me know if you have more questions.

  • Hi Ivan,

I might have missed it on a datasheet !

We should be able to avoid that in our design, as long as the internal architecture supports it !

    Thank you very much.
