TAS2552 and TAS2521 Understanding Need for audio codec

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS2552, TAS2521, TLV320AIC3204, TPA2011D1

Hi team,

I need to meet the following specifications for an audio speaker:

1. I2S Codec

a. Input

i. Microphone

b. Output

i. Mono

c. Features

i. Integrated power amp (3 - 6 W)

ii. Single Supply

2. I2S or PWM low power Amp

a. Output

i. 3 - 6 V

b. Features

i. Single supply

At first, I was looking into the the TAS2552, which fulfills the power amp requirement (correct me if I'm wrong here). My question is, does the TAS2552 require an audio codec between it and the processor? If it does, can you please recommend one based upon the requirements above?

After looking into that, I also found the part TAS2521, which looks to have an embedded miniDSP to take care of the codec portion of the requirements. Can this device fulfill the requirements above and integrate the codec and power amp into one IC?

Thank you!

Jared

  • Hello Jared,

TAS2552 is a good choice for the amplifier, but will require two power supplies. TAS2521 may be used as the amplifier as well, but with minor output power and two supplies are also required. MiniDSP of the TAS2521 offers more processing options for the I2S input of the amplifier, but it won't be enough to fill the codec requirements.

About Codec Options, maybe TLV320AIC3204 will be a good option, it has an integrated LDO that allows the device to use a single supply. However, this codec does not have an integrated class D amplifier, and 3W will be hard to get with any of our codecs. Maybe the use of an external amplifier like TPA2011D1 along with the TLV320AIC3204 will be the a good option.

  • Hello Diego,

One of the requirements for the codec was that it is supposed to have a digital audio interface of I2S. When I searched through the datasheet of the TLV320AIC3204, I2S is not found anywhere in the datasheet. Do you know if the TLV320AIC3204 can interface via I2S? The parametric search mentions it can, but the datasheet itself gives no mention.

Also, for the TPA2011D1, since the output requirement for the amp was 3-6 V, can you tell this requirement will be met based upon the output power (Po)? I'm not as familiar with audio amplifiers so I want to make sure I am understanding the specs correctly, any explanation you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

  • Hi Jared,

The TLV320AIC3204 supports I2S as inout, you can find that information in page 32 of the datasheet (As a tip, I don't know why but search tools in pdfs don't detect "I2S", generally I search "2S" and look out for I2S). More information about the features of this device can be found in the TLV320AIC3204 Application Reference Guide.

About the amplifier, I think I overlooked and understood 3-6 W, typically the amplifier output is specified in Watts. They could be referring to the output Vrms value or PWM high level (in class D amps). If you can ask customer for information about the max power they expect and speaker load used we can select a good option for them.
