TLV320AIC3254 outputs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3254, TLV320AIC3254EVM-K, TAS5508

Hello all,

I am planning to use TLV320AIC3254 in my project. I got to know that we can use headphone out as the second output. So I would like to drive two different frequencies. i.e. bass/ low frequency from one out put and mid/ high frequency from LOR and LOL. First, I am planning to use the evaluation board TLV320AIC3254EVM-K.

1) Can we separately control the frequency setting for headphone out and LOR and LOL or any changes made is going to affect both simultaneously?

2) Can I control both line outputs separately using AIC3254 Control Software (CS)?

Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Sam

  • Hi, Dulip,

    1. The headphone output and line outputs can be configured in different ways as the following picture shows:

If my understanding is correct, you want to use a different output signal on the headphone output and on the line output, right? So, you could route RDAC to LOL/LOR and LDAC to HPL/HPR. In this case, for example, the right DAC could be used for signal 1 and left DAC for signal 2.

    2. Yes, you're right. You can control both line outputs and headphone outputs separately with the AIC3254 control software. Please take a look of the following pictures.

I hope this helps you. If you still have questions or comments, please let me know.

  • Hello Luis,

Thank you so much for your very detailed comment on my question. I am new to this chip and my plan is to separate audio for satellite and woofer speakers.

1)I see all the controls (according to your screen shots) for two output routings. Is there a equalizer to adjust frequency of each channel. Say, for headphone out for woofer and LOL and LOR for satellite speakers.

2)The for -K user's guide, page 21 shows the possibility to adjust different frequencies in miniDSP Application. I am interested to know, does this control window share the both headphone and LOR/ LOL or there are separate equalizers to control headphone and LOR, LOL? separately.

    Thanks again your kind help!

    Best regards,

  • Hi, Sam,

    1. The TLV320AIC3254 supports a miniDSP which can be programmed by the user. It can be configured to use internal filters, equalizers, gains, mixers, etc. You may program a different algorithm per channel, such an equalizer to adjust the frequency.

    2. The TLV320AIC3254EVM-K control software has some predefined miniDSP algorithms such the equalizers. As you can see on page 21 of user's guide, both equalizers can be programmed per channel. So, it depends of the signal path that you select.
For example, you can route the left channel to the headphones and the right channel to the line output. All the changes on the left equalizer will affect the headphones output and the right equalizer will affect the line output. So, these equalizers affects the channel output (LDAC or RDAC).

I hope this helps you. Please let me know if you have questions or comments about this.

  • Hi Luis,

Thank you for your feedback. You mentioned we can control per channel (L or R). I just want to clarify,

    1) can I adjust frequencies of the line outputs and headphone out independently, not per channel. So that I can use line outputs (L+R) for mid /high range and headphone output for low frequency range (not per channel, i.e. can I use one equalizer that controls the line outs and the other equalizer headphone out puts?

In my project I want to use TLV320AIC3254 to separate mid/high frequencies for satellite and low frequency for a sub woofer. So that I should be able to adjust line in frequencies and feed them to two outputs (i.e. using line out and headphone output)

Thank you and your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards,
    Sam
  • Hi, Sam,

The miniDSP algorithms can be only applied per channel. Unfortunately, the equalizers cannot be used for line out or headphones out independently. Please take a look of the following picture:

As you can see, the miniDSP block is placed before the DAC. So, all the algorithms on the miniDSP (such the equalizers) will affect the DAC directly, not the outputs.

    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.

  • Hello Luis,

Yes I can see that. Will you be able to recommend product that can independently adjust frequencies of outputs. I know TAS5508 is used for this type of work. Is this product capable of battery powered applications (portable devices)?

Thanks again for your detailed answers and comments!
