PCM9211 Muxing or Mixing

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM9211, DIR9001

Objective: Mix an analog signal with a S/PDIF or COAX digital and get a truly mixed I2S out.

Setup: The PCM9211 part seems like it may be able to do this.  The data sheet states the following - "The PCM9211 integrates a stereo ADC, S/PDIF transceiver with up to 12 multiplexed inputs and 3x PCM inputs to allow other audio receivers to be multiplexed along with the analog and S/PDIF signals to a digital signal processor (DSP).

Question: Can the PCM9211 be configured in such a way that it is essentially mixing the ADC and the S/PDIF inputs so that the final I2S out can be used to create an acoustically pleasing, truly mixed signal.

Further Comments: The word "multiplexing" can be used for an "auto selection" function, (i.e. slow response multiplexing), it can also be applied to "high speed", or "word" multiplexing - which would essentially create the result of a mixed signal.  We want the later.

Thanks

  • Hi Thomas,

The PCM9211 does not have a mixing function. An external device would have to take the signals and mix them together. I do not know of a solution that can do this in one IC we make, but this could be done with a PCM186X device and a SPDIF receiver like the DIR9001. The PCM186X series has the ability to take in both analog and I2S audio and mix them in the digital domain into one I2S signal.

  • Justin,

That's good stuff.  That's going to work for us.

We are proceeding with the design based on your recommendations.

    Thanks!

  • Hello Justin,

We have a quick questions regarding the DIR9001.  If a Dolby encoded signal is routed into that chip, what happens?  Will it be down mixed to standard stereo?  Will it try to pass 5.1 via the I2S?  Or will it not pass any audio.

I look forward to your reply as we are quickly developing this project.

    Thanks,
