Preamplifier suggestions for LM386

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM386, LM741

I have been researching preamps for the LM386.  All I find, from the 80's till now, is the LM741. This sounds like a "he did it so I'll do it too" trail. I am looking for a more modern preamplifier, possibly single rail (as is the 386). Surely something must exist.  TI refused to answer the question and referred me to you all. I hope someone might have a suggestion !

Many thanks

  • You don't give much information to help you other than a "preamp for...".

With very few exceptions, just about any "amplifier", or more correctly, opamp, can be operated "single rail". Making a guess based on the post, your experience is limited. The first thing to do is research "single ended op amp (opamp)" here on TI's website. You will find more than one white paper describing the various topologies for working with opamps single-ended. Once you get a handle on that, it then becomes a matter of simply choosing a device that has the characteristics you're looking for (noise level, CMRR, PSRR, current requirements, etc.).

Regarding the LM386; that is a very capable part that has been around "forever". However, it's not a panacea. What is it that you're actually trying to do? There are many newer, much better "power amps" available that may help you more in your endeavors.

  • Hi Tom,

Could you share more details about your application in order to give a better approach for a solution to do what you need?
