Hello Team,

I am working with an engineer who is looking for a DSP platform suitable for their multi-microphone application. I recommended that they take a look at out TLV320AIC3268, since they are taking in 8 channels of audio and outputting 2(and it had a miniDSP on board). That being said here are my questions:

  • The customer gave me the following specifications on their system:
      • Input microphone channels(either digital or analog)
      •  48kHz sampling rate
      • Analog output
      • no requirements for driving headphones or small speakers
      • Typical 95dB SNR is okay
      • Mic SNR will be lower (not sure how much)
    • Given the above requirements will the on board miniDSP be able to support the desired application? Is there more information that I will need to gather before being able to verify this?

  • The customer is also looking at the TMS320C6748 DSP and was wondering what the recommended interface would be from the CODEC? ?  It looks like the McASP & McBSP interfaces on the DSP and the CODEC serial output both support multiple data formats (TDM, I2S, PCM, ?).

    Regarding the customer specifications, it seems that the miniDSP will be able to support all their needs. Additionally, the TLV320AIC3268 miniDSP has more memory than the rest of our codecs miniDSPs. So, there won't be problems with customer algorithms.

    Regarding your last question, this codec support multiple formats as you already mentioned. If customer is looking for a multi-channel operation and single data line solution, I would suggest to use a TDM format. However, if he is looking for a multi-channel and multi-line solution, the I2S data format would be better. If the TMS320C6748 DSP supports these formats, there shouldn't be problem.

    So the engineer also raised a question that there are 3 analog audio ports ( I assume for mixing ). I was looking at the data sheet and came across the final sentence in the image below highlighting that the CODEC supports the ability to mix up to 5 mono or 3 stereo (differential signals) going into each ADC PGA channel. Does that mean in total it can take in 10 mono or 3 differential signals between the two PGAs or is it just 5 mono/3 differential signals for the combined PGA's?

    I am currently getting confirmation on whether or not the engineer plans on using single ended or differential signals for his 8 microphone.

    The contact wanted to know if they need access to the McASP or McBSP interface for more channels? If even possible at all.

    You're right. The Codec has the ability to mix up to 5 mono or 3 stereo per channel. This can be verified on the AIC3268 functional block diagram:

    As you may see on the picture above, each PGA can receive up to 3 stereo signals or 5 mono signals (IN1R/L inputs have two different ways to be configured, so there are 6 lines connected to one of the PGA mixers).

    Regarding your question about the McASP or McBSP interface, since I'm supporting the audio codecs, I cannot get an answer in a timely manner. Could you post this question on the OMAP-L13x, AM1x and C674x Processors Forum? Maybe they can help you with this better than me.
