Creating an Amplifier to drive two speakers



Hi, first time on this forums but I would like to know the basics of creating an amplifier and how to drive speakers. This is a personal project as I am really interested in this kind of things. I already picked out the speakers to be RMS of 100 and 8 Impedance(Woofer) and RMS of 69 and 8 impedance(Tweeter)
Things I would love to learn

1. How to make sure the IC chip set is capable with chosen drivers.

2. How to find the gain of the system

3. How to find the suitable input voltage to drive such speakers

4. Which filter would be best and why do you need to find the transfer function.

4a If the woofer freq response is between 30Hz~3Khz do you want a filter that cuts after higher than 3khz? 

5. Would you need filters for the input audio ?

6. How do design the heatsink of such IC chip

6a How to find Power dissipation 

7 Just general usually equation to find specs of the IC

I know this may be a lot but I tried everywhere looking for such information. Thank you so much, cheers.

    Welcome to E2E, Thanks for your interest in our products!.

    Generally when choosing an amplifier for a new design, you need to know the desired output power on the speaker and the available Voltage range that will have your system. Also, you need to know the input type you need for your amplifier (analog/digital), the control type (SW/HW) and the class of the amplifier (Class D, AB, etc)

    The output filter selection depends on the amplifier type. for example a Class D amplifier is generally used with LC filter or ferrite beads for low power applications. 

    For woofer applications, we have several amplifiers that have configurable digital equalizers that you can use for creating the low band filter.

    The input of the amplifier may require a filter depending on the input used, but this is only applied for analog input ICs.  

    The heatsink selection is related to the amplifier used, as well as the maximum output power. Power dissipation data is often referred in the datasheet of our devices.

    I can help you finding the right amplifier for you and/or provide useful information, but I need to know your desired output power spec, input and control type, and amplifier class you prefer.

  • Hi thank you so much for the response.  160Watts output, Hmm Not sure about input and control type I was planning to add bluetooth to the input, not sure if that helps, and Class D would be preferred :) cheers
