LM48560 Inductor Selection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM48560

Hi,

My customer asks to me whether two candidate inductor parts can be use for LM48560 boost converter.
The specifications of two candidates are as follows:

MAKK2016T4R7M (TAIYO YUDEN)
Inductance : 4.7 uH ( test freq at 2MHz )
DC Resistance : 0.308 / 0.380 ohm ( typ / max )
Saturation current : 1, 200 / 1, 000 mA ( typ / max )
Temperature rise current : 1, 050 / 950 mA ( typ / max )

BRL3225T4R7M (TAIYO YUDEN)
Nominal inductance : 4.7 uH
DC Resistance : 0.180 ohm
Saturation current : 1, 300 mA
Temperature rise current : 1, 000 mA

Because of design for a small size product, he desires a smaller size part.

Best regards,
Akio Ito

You must take into account in order to choose an inductor that its saturation current rating should be greater than 1A and its DCR (series resistance) should be as low as possible. Both inductors seem to be correct for this device.
please let me know your opinion.

  • Hello Jose-san,

    Thank you for quick replay.
I have not yet answered to our customer about this. He desires MAKK2016T4R7M rather than BRL3225T4R7M by reason of mechanical size.
But I don't want to recommend MAKK2016T4R7M, because I doubt 'greater than 1A' does not include 1A.

  • Hi Akio-san

I have researched and you are correct, MAKK2016T4R7M has a saturation current of 950mA, then this inductor isn't recommended to be used with the LM48560.
