TPA3132 doesn't output any sound.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3132D2

Hello,

I designed a board using your TPA3132D2 amplifier, but it isn't working:

Actually, I designed two boards using your TPA3132D2 amplifier.  The first one worked, the second one, pictured above, did not.  I have checked with another amplifier to make sure the new design is working properly and outputting audio from the DAC as it should by probing the input to your amplifier chip and it is, so your chip is malfunctioning for some reason.

I also had two of these boards professionally manufactured and neither function so it's unlikely to be an issue with any solder bridging.

Here is the schematic and layout of the version which is not working:

And this is the schematic and layout for the version which did work:

As you can see the only significant change I made was to the gain setting resistor to set the amplifier to 20db.

You can also see from the photo above the chip is in the correct orientation.  And I have a good 12V power supply for it.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

  • HI, Shawn

The SDZ and FAULTZ need to pull up to PVDD, could you have a try and retest?

  • Thank you.  That turned out to be the problem, but your datasheet states in the pin definitions on page 4 that FAULTZ is high during normal operation and the section on automatic recovery of faults states only to connect FAULTZ directly to SDZ.

Also, while it states on page 13 in startup/shutdown information that SDZ should be held high during normal operation, one would presume that would be accomplished through shorting it to FAULTZ, if in fact the pin definition table were correct.

Only in the typical application schematic is a pullup shown on those pins, but given the rest of the information in the datasheet indicates that it shouldn't be needed, I overlooked it.

  • Hi, Shawn

Glad to hear that you have confirmed the root cause. Hope it won't cause much trouble to you.
