Class D Amplifier Clipping

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA2039D1

Question:

I did some testing with a Class AB vs your TPA2039D1 Class D, and it occurred to me that you can't actually clip the output of a class D as it is driving rail to rail anyway.

So therefore, any clipping must be due to the PWM waveform remaining at >99% duty for too long, thus sending a portion of apparent DC to the loudspeaker at the supply rail voltage correct?

Let me know if I'm on the wrong track.

Answer:

The analog input Class D amplifier will clip internally before the PWM modulation reaches >99%.  Please see the attached presentation on the TPA2039D1 which will explain what will happen in more detail.
