What Is The “Crest Factor” And Why Is It Used?

The Crest Factor is equal to the peak amplitude of a waveform divided by the RMS value. The purpose of the crest factor calculation is to give a quick idea of how much impacting is occurring in a waveform。
For Audio purposes, we design the power supply voltage to the peak amplitude to avoid clippling.  We design the power supply current capability and thermal capability to the RMS power output of the amplifier.
