RF feed Trace

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC8520

Hello

looking at cc8520 evaluation board PCB , I have noticed there is a long trace (without GNG plane) feeds PCB antenna.

What is the width of this trace ?(I assume 50 ohm)

How did you calculate the width , this is not a micro strip trace , I think.

Why there is not Gnd plane under it?

Regards,

Farhad

  • It is a micro strip trace... Go here: http://www.linxtechnologies.com/Support/Software/ and download the microstrip calculator. This will help answer your questions about the board trace.

Secondly, there is GND under the trace (look at the board PDF, there is GND on each layer), however there is no GND under the actual antenna. You can't put ground under the antenna; this would truncate the field. Unless you are very familiar with designing PCB antennas I'd suggest staying away (far, far away) from them and use an SMA connector and a purchased antenna (there are also chip antenna available, search Google).
