TAS3204 program by MCU via I2C

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS3204, PUREPATHSTUDIO

Hello everybody,

I need to download the program for the TAS3204 not with an EEPROM but with a MUC.

I got the TAS3204EVM annd the PPS ofcourse.

I did build a PF with the PPS and downloaded this to the TAS3204EVM - fine.

As my final application does not have a EEPROM but a MCU.

What do I have to send to the TAS3204 by the MCU via I2C?

Thanks.

PurePath Studio has a build in tool which converts the eeprom image to a sequence of I2C commands that can be send to the TAS3204 via the I2C Load Control and Data Registers (Registers 0x04 & 0x05 ). In the same directory as the EEPROM image <install Directory>\Texas Instruments Inc\PurePathStudio\MyProcessFlows you will find a .cfg file that contains the same name as the eeprom.image file. This .cfg file is more-or-less just series of I2C commands that are written to the TAS3204 via it's slave I2C interface.

Simply poll for TAS3204 GPIO1 to go low in your applicaiton. This signals that the slave I2C interface is active. (See Section 10.5.1 in the TAS3204 Datasheet on TI.com).

Once GPIO1 is driven low  - you can use your host MCU to download the contents of the .cfg file to the TAS3204.

    Example:

    X04   < 8 byte data payload >          < - -Single Host MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x04

    X05    < 8 byte data payload >         < - -SingleHost MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x05

    X05     < 8 byte data payload >        < - -SingleHost MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x05

    .....      < 8 byte data payload >         < -- SingleHost MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x05

    .....       < 8 byte data payload >       < - -SingleHost MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x05

    X04       < 8 byte data payload >      < - SingleHost MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x04

    X05       < 8 byte data payload >       < - SingleHost MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x05

    ....       < 8 byte data payload >    < - SingleHost MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x05

    ....       < 8 byte data payload >    < - SingleHost MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x05

    X04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00      < - SingleHost MCU Write to TAS3204 register 0x04

After the final write to X04, the TAS3204, you should read the status register to make sure there was no error detected by the TAS3204.

  • Thank you Drew but I did not find the .cfg file.

My process flow is named TAS3204pf2 so I guess the desired file should be TAS3204pf2.cfg

I searched my hard disk to find TAS3204pf2.* and found

    TAS3204pf2.pfw

    TAS3204pf2.image

    TAS3204pf2.map

    TAS3204pf2.debug

    TAS3204pf2.hex

    But no TAS3204pf2.cfg

    Any idea?

    Thanks.

  • Thomas, in PPS go to 'tools', 'options', 'hardware' and select 'slave download'. Do a build and you will find the file you need has appeared!

  • Thanks Neil!

I found the .cfg file now.

These are a lot single MCU I2C write actions.

I found that the data read from the EEPROM is in one string. Isn´t it?

Any hinds of how to have the TAS3204 to perform a master read from the MCU?

    Thanks.

    Thomas,

The TAS3204 firmware is written in such a way that the master I2C interface is only active immediately following a Power on Reset. Unfortunatly, there is not a way for the TAS3x family to read from a host MCU using the master port without restructuring the firmware. You'll have to stick with the series of I2C writes / else use an EEPROM.

  • Thomas, if your MCU can act as an I2C slave and look like a serial flash memory then you should be able to boot the TAS3204 from your MCU.

If your MCU has two I2C interfaces then one can act as master and the other act as slave, otherwise you will need to change the configuration of your MCU after loading code into the TAS3204.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thanks Neil and Drew.

    I got it sorted.

I did both simulation an I2C EEPROM with the MCU and doing a download to the TAS3204 with the MCU master I2C.

  • Hi Neil,

Could you please advise version of PPS, I am not see "slave download' option in PPS.

My version is 1.82 build 5

    Thank you very much.

    Gavin

  • I am using version 1.88 build 3 but the option was also in the earlier versions under Tools, Options, Hardware.

    Regards

    Neil

  • Yes, I also find option for build as well.

    Thank you very much.

    Best Regards,

    Gavin

  • Dear Neil

I am faceing the same problem that want to download the program via the mcu(stm32f10x) 's I2C ,the TAS3204 I2C act as the slave

but my purepath studio version is 1.82 build 5

I can't find the "slave download" option !

Could you please advise version of PPS the newer version?

    Thank you very much.
