Recommendation for Audio DAC?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320DAC3101, TLV320DAC3203, TLV320AIC3253

I am  looking for a good 2-channel (Left/Right) audio DAC from TI that would work with the MAX9744 which I am currently using as an audio amplifier. It would need an I2S interface for the uController side.

I have looked at the following products list but there are so many similar products that I am not sure which to pick. Can you recommend a few of these out the list: http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/audio-ic/audio-dac-product.page

Also, do you recommend putting down a SRC (Sample Rate Converter) or is this usually not necessary? My experience with audio files is limited to non-existent so I am not sure how to make a prediction on whether sample rate conversion will be necessary.

  • Hi, Daniel,

I would recommend the TLV320DAC3203. It is a great DAC that is easily configured. I supports processing blocks which can be used for filtering purposes. If you are interested in more outputs, the TLV320DAC3101 could be another option.

Regarding the sample rate converter, it won't be necessary to add this device since there's no need to modify the sample rate. This is used in cases where the sampling rate cannot be reached in the I2S lines.

  • Are these DACs the best to use if I am not using analog inputs? What if I do not want to use the analog inputs? Do I just leave this unconnected? Would there a danger of noise addition if left floating?

Are there better DACs to use if I am just leaving digital to analog audio generation?

  • Hi, Daniel,

The unused analog inputs should be connected to a 0.47uF capacitor to GND. This eliminates noise effects on the analog side.

If you require a better DAC with more capabilities, I would recommend the TLV320AIC3253. This device also supports miniDSP that can be used to improve signal quality with internal algorithms.

  • What I meant was, is there another more appropriate DAC without the analog inputs, just the I2S (digital) input?
  • Hi, Daniel,

The most part of our TLV320DACxxxx family devices has analog inputs if required. These analog inputs can be disabled if they won't be used. You may take a look at the PCM179x family. It is designed for line applications. These devices don't have analog inputs as you mentioned.
