Can I use audio DAC instead of precision DAC for precision application?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1753, PCM1780

Dear Technical Support Team,

I have a question about audio DAC.

Can I use audio DAC instead of precision DAC for precision application?

I'm searching for 24bit and 2ch or 4ch DAC on precision DAC.

I can't find it. but audio DAC has these spec like PCM1780/1781 and PCM1753/1754.

I think that audio the DAC doesn't have offset spec.

Do you have the other difference between audio DAC and precision DAC?

Could you give me some attention when we use it?

・Resolution24bit

・Channels24ch

・Sample Rate(MAX)(SPS)144kSPS

・I/FPCM Data format

  • Hi, ttd,

This seems interesting, My colleague will check this question and will get back to you soon.

  • Hi Diego Meléndez López,

    Thank you for your reply.
Do you get any information about this post?

  • Dear ttd,

The difference between audio and precision delta-sigma converters lies primarily in their performance at DC. Because DC accuracy isn’t that important in audio, it’s difficult to find audio converters that specify any of the important parameters related to DC accuracy, such as offset, gain error, or drift.

Temperature stability and initial accuracy generally aren’t considerations for audio devices, but they are critical for most precision measurement applications. Also, without knowing the accuracy or drift characteristics of internal voltage reference, it may be difficult to calculate system error budget.

Finally, the digital filters in many audio devices do not pass dc, but have a high pass filter down at low frequencies. This would prevent their use completely for dc measurements.

So if your application does not require operating at dc itself, one may use audio converter for precision application with the caveat that there is still the concern about calculating your error budget as audio converters rarely specify linearity.

Can you comment more on end application? Thanks.

    Best regards,
    Ravi
