TAS5630B Power modulation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5630B

Hello,

I am designing a TAS5630B based audio amplifier (PBTL - Mono) that will supply a 4 ohm speaker.

I would like to know what would be the best way to modulate the output power of the audio amplifier ? I have thought that I might modulate the supply voltage PVDD, but  maybe there is a better way ?

Thank you in advance for your answer.

  • Hello,

The output power can be reduce by reducing the PVDD supply voltage, however, if the input signal is very large, the amplifier will clip causing distortion. It is recommended to select the correct PVDD voltage for the desired output power while also setting the maximum allowed input signal such that the desired maximum distortion is not exceeded.

The TAS5630B has 23dB of voltage gain so the output voltage be the input signal multiplied by this gain factor.
Section 6.9.3 on pg. 13 of the datasheet shows output power vs PVDD voltage. This is for 10% THD. Therefore a lower distortion target will yield less power.

From the desired maximum output power, the maximum input voltage can be calculated.

    Best Regards,
