TPA6120A2 possible to bias it for class A operation?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA6120A2

I know headphone amp TPA6120A2 is designed to operate in class AB.  Is it possible to bias it to operate in class A?

I tried to add a DC voltage at inverting input so that the output swings between 0V and 5V under +/-8V supplies.  Output is ac coupled to a 16 ohm load.  The current draw from positive and negative supplies are the same.  I doubt if it is working in class A or still class AB under this condition.

  • Hi Chris,

    Welcome to e2e.
This is not a common use of the TPA6120A2, why would you need an operation like this?
Perhaps you could measure the current consumption when biasing the amplifier to verify if the consumption increases.

  • Hi Ivan,

It's a digital audio player product supporting Hi-res loss-less and DSD formats.  Customer likes class A sound.  I know it is not a common use of TPA6120A2 but I really want to see if there is a possibility.  From some previous work, it seems not possible to change the internal bias to make it real class A.  I would like hear from TI experts.
