PCM5102A: [ PCM510xA ] Design Tips for Better Sound Quality

[ PCM510xA ] Design Tips for Better Sound Quality

Hi Expert,

My customer is looking for design tips to have "better" sound quality with PCM5102A.
Does TI have any of idea/tips?
(I know that the term "better" may be different for each person, though...)

Here, I have a couple of questions from my customer...

<Q1: Power Supply Separation>:

The datasheet suggests a single power supply for PCM5102A, however any concerns on noise on AVDD rail which is coupled from CPVDD supply?

<Q2: Charge Pump Cap>:

Do you have any suggestion for Charge pump cap?
Is the audio grade cap recommended?

<Q3: 10uF Aluminum Electrolytic Cap>:

Are 10uF aluminum electrolytic caps required for whole rails? (DVDD, AVDD and LDOO)
Any chance to replace these to ceramic caps?

Especially, my customer does not use on-chip LDO, in this case, can this 10uF be removed?

Thank you for your support in advance.
Regards,
Ken

  • Hi, Kenichiro,

Sorry for the delay, my colleague is looking into this and will provide his comments soon.

  • Thanks for following up this.
I wait for further feedback from your team!

  • Diego,

Sorry, let me add a question with regards to power-up sequence.
From the fig 42 of PCM5102A-Q1 datasheet, it seems all of power rails (AVDD, CPVDD, DVDD and LDOO) ramp up simultaneously.
Is this required power-up sequence? Any recommended or restricted power sequence do you have?

Thank you for your support in advance.
    Regards,
    Ken

  • Dear Ken,
    sorry for the delayed response.

As far as noise on AVDD rail is concerned, if you follow the layout guidelines in DS, this can be minimized and should not be a concern.
Charge pump caps need not be audio grade caps and could be ceramic type.
As far as 10uF caps, it's not recommended for those to be ceramic caps and need to be Al Electrolytic caps.

    Best regards,
    Ravi
  • Dear Ken,
The supplies (DVDD, AVDD, CPVDD) is recommeded to be powered up at the same time. The PCM51xx is very tolerant to power supply sequencing. And you should bring them up at the same time.

    Best regards,
    Ravi
  • Ravi,

Thank you for your reply. Let me double check...

    > The supplies (DVDD, AVDD, CPVDD) is recommeded to be powered up at the same time. The PCM51xx is very tolerant to power supply sequencing.
    > And you should bring them up at the same time.

Since my customer would use the separate supply for each supply rails, it means that there are power sequences.
    (It cannot be simultaneous.)
Do you mean customer need to use simultaneous ramp-up? or still can use the sequential ramp?

    Thanks,
    Ken
