TAS5731M: TAS5731M modulation index setting

Part Number: TAS5731M

Hello Audio Folks, a customer is using TAS5731M. They get a problem on dis-continuous sound output in max volume output. If they set back reg 0x10 = 0x07, then it is OK with no problem.

They are using 12V supply. In data sheet, the requirement on setting reg 0x10 is only on 18V or higher supply voltage. That is the reason they don't set reg 0x10. However, one thing is that they are using very low impedance (two 5.6 ohm speaker in parallel, i.e. 2.8 ohm). So, the question is that the requirement on setting reg 0x10 is on high current or it is just required on high supply voltage.

  • Hi, Kes,

The requirement of changing Modulation Index when operation is above 18V is necessary to ensure BST caps are fully charged. In this particular situation, the problem seems more related to an Over-current issue caused by operating the amplifier with such a small load at max volume. When the modulation index is set to the minimum, the maximum current in the output is reduced, likely fixing the issue. Do you know if the customer looked at register 0x02 to identify an error report?.
