The below article gives a good overview of the advantages associated with Class-D closed-loop architectures. The closed-loop vs. open-loop debate has gone on for years, with valid arguments to be made for choosing either architecture, but in the consumer audio world of 20W or less, it's pretty much gone the way of closed-loop.
This article focuses in on digital-input (I2S) amplifiers were it's still common to find both open-loop and closed-loop architectures. The same arguments apply to analog-input amplifiers, but the vast majority of analog-input amplifiers are closed-loop.
