PCM3070: Its resolution

Hi everyone. I'm a new user and currently trying to develop an audio codec for wireless transmission. The process requires analogue to digital conversions and signal processing, linear sub-band filtering, adaptive differential pulse code modulation, etc. So i thought this product could help me. I want to work with 24 bit audio samples. Its online description (http://www.ti.com/product/PCM3070 ) says it has a resolution of 32-bits. Does this resolution accounts also for the ADC? Then, i have a wider question, do you believe this audio codec has enough power for what i want to do? The codec i'm trying to design is similar to enhance apt-x.

Welcome to e2e and thank you for your interest in our products!

The PCM3070 has a configurable serial data interface resolution. Normally, we specify the max resolution, which is 32 bits. But it can be set as 16, 20, 24 or 32 bits.

Regarding your question about the codec capabilities, its miniDSP has enough power to signal processing and filtering. However, the adaptive differential pulse code modulation is not supported by our audio converters. For these algorithms, you would require an external DSP.

Thanks for the quick response. Which DSP would you recommend me for the ADPCM?

Hi, Mariano,

I would recommend a C55 DSP, but you may take a look at the C5000 Ultra Low Power DSP Forum ( e2e.ti.com/.../ ), they should have more experience on these devices and they could provide more specific information.
