TAS5711: Converting S/PDIF AC3/DTS 5.1 to 2.1 surround sound

Part Number: TAS5711
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM9211, DIX9211, DIR9001

Hello,

Our customer wants a solution for converting S/PDIF AC3/DTS 5.1 to 2.1 surround sound. Could you please provide any TI solution? Many thanks.

I found an evaluation module of TAS5711PHPEVM. The description showed its feature includes optical/coxial input and surround sound. Is it suitable for the application? Could you let me know the reference design of MC57xxPSIA controller board?

Please find detail information as the following.

1. Product: Sound Bar

2. Input: S/PDIF AC3/DTS 5.1

3. Output: 2.1 Surround sound (2 single-speakers + 1 subwoofer)

With best regards,

Tom

  • Hi Tom,

Thank you for your question and for your interest in our devices.

I would suggest using an audio interface transceiver such as the DIX9211 or PCM9211 to convert from S/PDIF to I2S. The I2S output can then be used to drive the TAS5711 amplifier (here is a nice block diagram for the device http://www.ti.com/general/docs/datasheetdiagram.tsp?genericPartNumber=DIX9211&diagramId=SBAS519 ).

I will have to look into the MC57xxPSIA + EVM solution and get back to you, but I believe using an audio interface transceiver will be less complicated.

  • Hi Alex,

Many thanks for your reply. I already forwarded TI solution to customer.
But customer told they would like to use their existing Power Amplifier to drive 2.1 speakers. So TAS5711 is not necessary.
Also they want converting 5.1 AC3/DTS to 2.1 Virtual Surround Sound.

Could you please suggest another TI solution again? Many thanks.

    1. Digital audio interface receiver: Is DIR9001 applicable?
The Sound Bar design does not need Digital Audio I/F Transmitter of DIX9211/PCM9211.

    2. Is there any TI audio processor can convert 5.1 AC3/DTS to 2.1 Virtual Surround Sound?
Customer emphasised the audio output spec is Virtual Surround but not 3D Surround.

    With best regards,

    Tom
  • Hi Tom,

Thanks for the follow up. I am confirming a few points on this and will get back to you momentarily.

  • Hi Tom,

    Thanks for your patience.

To help you with converting 5.1 AC3/DTS to 2.1 surround sound in this setup I would need more details on how the customer wants the overall system to work. Would you be able to provide me with a block diagram of the customer’s design (I am specifically interested in the specifics of the 5.1 signal input, the output that will be going to the audio amplifier, and the type of processing needed for the conversion)?

    To answer your questions

    1) www.ti.com/.../rdk-value-sb gives an example of the DIR9001 used in a soundbar application with an S/PDIF input. However, this application does not take 5.1 surround sound. If you can give me a better idea of the customer’s system I will look into whether this type of system would work for them.

    2) To answer this I will need more details of the audio processing power required. I might suggesting posting in the E2E DSP or the audio converters forums depending on the processing power needed to perform the conversion.

    Regards,

    Alex
  • Hi Alex,

Thanks for your reply. I am reviewing with customer side to get the block diagram and detail technical spec of the Sound Bar design.

    Best regards,
