Driving a speaker with CODEC Integrated with amplifier OR using external Amplifier

Hello,

I am new to the Audio design. I am designing a prototype to drive an 4 Ohm/ 8Ohm speaker with 2W-3W power rating.

Being an amateur, I googled the things to understand few things. Still I have left with few queries, which I hope get answered here.

1. I could see 4Ohm/ 8Ohm speakers with power rating in mW to few Watts. Is that mean the Speaker driver must be capable of driving more current for the speaker with more power rating?

2. I could see, most of the Audio codecs have the Maximum Power output in mW and few supports the Power outputs in watts with integrated Class AB/ Class D amplifiers. Could you suggest me which approach will be better suited for my requirement. Is Amplifier Integrated CODEC OR using a codec in combination with external class amplifier?

Also, please suggest me the Audio CODEC and the Class amplifiers which would be better suited for my requirement.

I would be using I2S interface from Master end.

Hope I have not asked too much in one question.

Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Amith Bhat

  • Hello Amit,

Welcome to E2E, thanks for your interest in our products.
    1) That's right, the speaker should be able to handle a higher current for an audio amplifier with a higher power rating.
    2) It depends on your requirements. For instance, if you use a CODEC with mono audio Class-D would reduce the PCB's space, but there are a few CODEC with a 2W-3W power rating. On the other hand, If you use a CODEC + Audio Class-D amplifier would increase the PCB's space, but you could get more options.
You can have a look at the following devices: TLV320AIC3100 and TLV320AIC3120, these devices have the included Audio Class-D amplifier or can have a look at the normal CODECs like TLV320AIC3104, TLV320AIC3105, etc, but you need to add an Audio Class-D amplifier such as TPA2010D1, TPA2015D1, TPA2033D1, etc. You can refer product folder on ti.com to find more devices options.
