TPA3140D2: Driving a 4 ohm (BTL) speaker using the TPA3140D2

Part Number: TPA3140D2

Hi,

I was wondering if the TPA3140D2 was suitable to drive speakers at 4 ohms in BTL mode. Most of the specifications and plots indicate they're more suitable for 8 and 6 ohms, but is it fine to drive 4 ohm speakers ? And if so, will the quality suffer significantly such that if this were in a portable audio speaker, the typical user or consumer would be able to notice distortion and noise ?

Thanks,

  • Hi Nabil,

The minimum resistance depends on your power supply and output mode (BTL or PBTL). Please see the below table, this info is also shown in datasheet(page 5).

There is no performance loss as soon as the load resistance can meet this requirement.
