Hello TI team,

We have a wireless microphone system using the AIC3204 for basic EQ filtering. The AGC function is currently not used.
Now, we want to use the chipset to detect presence of sound, so a microphone below a given threshold (level) /duration (time) will be muted (or literally: no longer transmit RF signal to the receiver in order to free up RF channels). Is it possible to use the AGC function (for instance, the AGC noise threshold flag) to read the sound level on the input, without activating the AGC function itself, or do you have a better suggestion? We have a MCU/Host Processor as part of the system which can be used to control the logics.

Hi, Eggz,

The AGC is able to mute the analog input if the signal level is below -30dB. If the signal level is above this value, the AGC won't be able to make this. However, the AGC needs to be enabled. So, the AGC would be fully operating in order to use the noise threshold function.

Thanks for writing back so quickly. OK, I understand. We decided not to use the AGC function in our design, so I'm afraid it rules out this approach. Is there a sound level monitor output of some sort (or a way to direct such a signal to a port) on the AIC3204 which in turn can be fed into our Host Processor/MCU for further analysis?

Hi, Eggz,

Unfortunately, this audio codec doesn't have this capability. However, I would recommend to take a look at the TLV320AIC3254. Basically, it is a TLV320AIC3204 with programmable miniDSP. The miniDSP can be configured to monitor the sound level and send a signal through the GPIO pin if it reaches a certain level.

Hi Luis,

A few weeks back you guided me in the direction of the AIC3254 to monitor sound level (from a microphone). You wrote that the miniDSP could be configured to feed this information via the GPIO pin.
My question is if the same information can be fed to the MCU via I2C / SPI bus?

Hi, Eggz,

The TLV320AIC3254 is able to monitor the level as we mentioned in past posts. All blocks in PurePath Studio have an assigned I2C address that you may check on the main PurePath Studio Window. The MCU should be able to read the I2C addresses of the AIC3254 in order to get this information.
