PCM5101A: Can it be I2S Master using only hardware configuration

Part Number: PCM5101A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM5242, PCM5121,

I'm looking for an I2S DAC that needs to be the I2S master.  I will supply the master clock at 12.288MHz for 48kHz sample rate audio stream.  I'm looking for something simple and small with only hardware configuration to avoid adding software control in the system.  I've seen a mention in a forum that this part or part series PCM510xA can be an I2S master, but the only comments I see to master mode is in section 9.3.5.2 of the data sheet where it says:

"SCK rates that are not common to standard audio clocks, between 1 MHz and 50 MHz, are only supported in software mode, available only in the PCM512x, PCM514x, and  PCM5242 devices, by configuring various PLL and clock-divider registers. This programmability allows the device to become a clock master and drive the host serial port with LRCK and BCK, from a non-audio related  clock."

Will this part work for my needs or do I need a different one?  If a different one is required, what is the next best part that can be HW configured and at least do better than -80dB THD+N?

  • Hi, Doug,

Welcome to E2E, Thanks for your interest in our products!.

Unfortunately, the PCM5101A is not able to operate as a I²S Master device, actually, this device doesn't have an option to operate in software mode. I would recommend you to take  a look to the PCM5121, this device has a similar performance to the PCM5101A and can be configured as a Master device via hardware.

  • Thanks for the quick response Diego.  That is exactly the information I needed.  Thanks for the recommendation on the PCM5121.  Looks like it could work for me.
