PCM1864: 8 Digital MEMs mics: simplest, cheapest, PDM-->PCM??

Hello,

I am looking for the simplest way to convert digital MEMs mic PDM to PCM.  I have 8 mics to support.  I want to support PCM at rates up to 48 kHz.  

From this thread I see that the  TLV320ADC3101 is an option -- can you verify that this supports up to 48 kHz PCM?

Another option seems to be  PCM1862.

For 8 mics, I would need 4X 3101s or 2X PCM1862, correct?  In this case, it seems cheaper to use 2X PCM1862, correct.

  • Instead of the PCM1862, it looks, like I need the PCM1864 to support 4X PDM-PCM - so please substitute 1864 for 1862 in the above question. thx

    Welcome to E2E, Thanks for your interest in our products!.

    Either the TLV320ADC3101 or PCM1864 supports digital microphone inputs and PCM (I²S, LJ, RJ) outputs. The TLV320ADC3101 supports two digital mics, while the PCM1864 supports up to four. 48KHz sample rate is supported by both devices.

    One thing to mention is that these parts are intended to be used in different applications. While the TLV320ADC3101 is oriented for portable applications, the PCM1864 is oriented for line applications. I would recommend you to take a look to the available features for each device and check which one fits better in your end-application. If you can share more information about your application, we can also provide our suggestion.

  • I am looking to build a mic-array for audio capture in an office, for example. The emphasis is on audio quality, low cost and not necessarily power-draw.

    Also, is there any difference between the two for the level of software difficulty/support? Are there TI libraries that can be used with either part for PDm-PCM conversion or do I need to design my own using TI building blocks?

    Thanks for the feedback, it seems that the PCM1864 would be a better option for your application.

    In terms of programming effort, both devices are configured with I²C interface, being the TLV320ADC3101 more complex in terms of configuration. However, the 'ADC3101  features a configurable miniDSP capable of performing audio signal processing. The PCM1864 doesn't have a configurable miniDSP, so if advanced processing is required, an external audio processor might be required.
