TPA3106D1: What are the power current requirements?

Part Number: TPA3106D1

What are the current requirements of the TPA3106? Looking at the datasheet, it seems like a 3A source might be sufficient, maybe even 2A.

  • Hi Johny,
The current requirement depends on your output power from the device and power supply voltage. When we do some experiment with TPA3106D2 on bench, generally we use a 3~4A Max power supply to reserve enough margin.
There is a simple way to estimate the power current. The first, you need to know the maximum output power from TPA3106D2 in your application . Then in figure 17~19 in the datasheet, you can find the efficiency in your case, then calculate the total power consumption, then calculat the maximum power current. Please also reserve enough magin above the result.

  • Hi Shawn

    My application:

    gain: 36 dB
    supply: 26 V
    load: 8 ohm

by fig 19, i guess my efficiency is about 85%, by looking at 39 W position. But not really sure if 39 W is correct position to look at.

so, by fig 20, i guess my current is about 1.5 A, which does not sound correct to me.

what difference between power consumption and power current?

    (D1, by the way, not D2  :)

  • Hi Johny,
Total power consumption = power supply voltage x power supply current.
Form Figure 19, the efficiency should be around 85%, then the total power consumption= ouput power/ efficiency = 39/0.85=45.9W. The current on power supply = total power consumption/power supply voltage=45.9/26=1.77A.
