TAS2555: Disabling the internal boost regulator

Hi,

Is there any way to disable the boost regulator and not need to place an inductor between SW and VBATT? We don't have the space to fit an inductor in our application, so how should VBATT and SW be connected if we don't place an inductor?

Also, which registers should we change over I2C to do this?

Hello Stephen,

Welcome to E2E, thanks for your interest in our products.
It is not recommended to remove the inductor because that could cause some damage to the device.
You could use a 1uH/1.5A inductor instead of the 2.2uF/3.1A inductor in order to reduce the board area. The 1uH/1.5A inductors should be much smaller in the area, but you need to limit the boost current under the TAS2555 Home/Device control panel. The picture shows where you should change the value.

How would not having an inductor damage the device if I disable the inductor at all times using register PCR_BOOST to disable it?

Stephen,

That could cause some damage to the device when the MOSFETs turn on and off even when the boost converter is disabled.

Hi Jose,

Is there anything else that can be done to get rid of the inductor or decrease total solution size? What about switching to TAS2559/7? I know they all come in the same package but would any other device lead to a smaller total solution size?

Stephen,

You could share the bypass caps on IOVDD and DVDD pins or you could remove the EMI filter at the output if the application isn't susceptible to EMI. Could you provide me further information about your application?

I can't share too many details about our application, but we are very constrained by size and power consumption.
