TPA3255EVM: TPA3255

Part Number: TPA3255EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3255

The TPA3255 Evaluation Module requires a 14V up to 53.5V power supply at 12A.  Is there a good off the shelf power supply for this?   I will be testing the EVM in the PBTL 600W configuration.  Is there a recommended input voltage for best performance, or will any voltage between 14V and 53.5 Volts?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • Hi Randy,

A bench power supply will give you the best performance, but we've found that LED drivers sometimes will have the power required to drive our amps. I've used this one before: Switching Power Supplies 600W 48V 12.5A Power Supply W/PFC. Double check input voltage and frequency to ensure this will work for you.

For best power performance, you're going to want to run this at a higher voltage. Check out Figure 22 and Figure 23 in section 7.11 Typical Characteristics, PBTL Configuration of the TPA3255 Datasheet (page 13). For example, you can only reach 100W at 1% THD with a 4 Ohm load when PVDD is limited to 30V. To get to 600W at 10% THD, you'll need a 51V PVDD and a 2 ohm load.

    Best regards,

    Dan

  • Thank you Dan
I can now clearly see that I need the higher DC input voltage to get the performance that I need. Makes sense, in that you can't more wattage out that what you put in. But for whatever reason, your above link to: Switching Power Supplies 600W 48V 12.5A Power Supply W/PFC didn't work, saying that that page doesn't exist, and a search on TI's website only brings me back to your above response. I'm still trying to search my way through it, but could you double check to see if it works? Thanks again.

    Best regards,

    Randy

  • Hey Randy,

Sorry about that. Not quite sure why that link isn't working. If you search either of these below you should be able to get to it.

    Mouser Part #: 709-HEP600-48

    Manufacturer Part #: HEP-600-48

Let me know if that works.

    Best regards,

    Dan

  • Thanks Dan, that answers my initial questions and gets me over the bump.

  • Great! Let me know if you have any other questions.
