TPA3255 0.5 ohm load 15 amps 0.1 Hz

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3255I plan to use the TPA3255 audio amplifier for a special application (not audio)
Drive 15 Amp to a 0.5 ohm load at 0.1 Hz (112 watt).
Do you think the amplifier can drive a load of 0.5 ohms?
The TPA3255 input impedance is 20 k ohm; add coupling capacitance of 470u allows driving 0.1 Hz signal.
But it is not clear from the specification how the amplifier will respond at such a low frequency
What will be the THD?
Theoretically Class D amplifier can work in DC is TPA3255 have any minimum frequency limit?
Thank you
Haim
  • Hi Haim,

Theoretically this should be possible, the current limit of the TPA3255 is 17 Amps per full bridge, so in PBTL mode that would be 34 A peak available. Your application looks like it would take about 22 A peak, 15 Arms, for 112 Wavg. However, we do not run any tests or characterization below 10Hz, and thermal will definitely be something to watch out for if this will be a continuous output. So I am not sure what the performance would be, I will look into this more and get back to you on what I find.
