slea036 - TAS5010 PWM controller schematic error?

I have started to design a system for which I want to use the TAS5010 PWM controller.  I was looking at the TAS5010-5112F2EVM Application Report , slea036, and the schematic for the TAS5010 has some inconsistencies between the TAS5010 pin description and the schematic implementation.  Mistakes such as pins 13 and 14, DVSS1 and DVDD1, are shorted together, and pins 11 and 12, an NC and DVDD1, are wired to the I2C data bus.  I though perhaps this was just a mistake in the schematic, but I see that the PCB layout matches the schematic.

Before I continue with the TAS5010, I would like to know if there is a mistake in device datasheet's pin description, or if perhaps there is another explanation why the TAS5010-5112F2EVM has the TAS5010 wired to the I2C data and why DVDD1 is shorted to DVSS1.  Has anyone created a design using this chip who can tell me whether or not I can continue my design using the datasheet's pin description, or should I use the design as found in the slea036.

  • Hi,

    If you want 20W or 25W per channel then the TAS5715 is much cheaper. Your choice of this old PWM modulator maybe misguided, the TAS5086 is cheaper and can be paired with many class-d amps from 20W to 600W.

    I suspect that the TAS5010 has some un-documented functionality that is exposed on the EVM schematics. This cannot be relied upon, I would recommend using a much newer part.

    What is your target spec for the stereo amp?

  • Thanks for your response, I kind of was thinking along the same lines that this was alluding to some functionality not described in the datasheet.

    As far as my desired output power, I am designing a >200W/channel system.  And, while I realize that this chip is older and more expensive than other chips, I will only be building a couple of these systems to give as Christmas gifts for friends so the price isn't that big of a deal.  And, because I only need a one channel amplifier, I have decided to use the 2-channel TAS5012 controller mostly because I have no need for anything more sophisticated (I had posted about the TAS5010 because the two circuits seem to be fairly equivalent).

    The design is going to be a PC to home stereo speaker digital audio transmission system.  The parts are going to be PC USB --> PCM2706 USB audio codec --> CC8520 wireless audio streamer transmitting to two CC8520 wireless audio receivers --> (for each CC8520 receiver channel) TAS5012 PWM controller --> TAS5261 power stage.  Each amplifier channel has a power supply consisting of an old laptop battery charger (these power supplies can easily be found for around $5 on the internet, and they usually supply about 20VDC at about 4-5 Amps), with a DC to DC boost regulator to boost the DC supply to about 30-40 Volts.  This is all still in the first stages of design, and I will definitely make some changes over the next couple of weeks.
