DF1704: I2S operation

Part Number: DF1704

Hello, I know this question is about a now defunct part, but I'm trying to understand the significance of the I2S input mode selector in the DF1704. The filter can be set to either 16-bit or 24-bit I2S input format. Why is there a distinction as it seems that modern devices that support the I2S serial input format typically don't have such an option and can simply be put into the I2S mode without specifying the word length. In particular I'd like to understand what happens if the DF1704 is set to the 24-bit I2S word but 16-bit words are actually sent to it from an upstream device and if this is a valid operation scenario. Thanks in advance for any relevant info.

  • Hi Vlad,

I do not see anything in the documentation that would suggest that 16bit data in the 24bit mode would cause any issues and it should be a valid operation. That being said, I do not have any hardware to confirm this. It might be worthwhile to ensure that you have capability to set the IWx pins to the 16bit value just in case you notice any performance issues.

    Good luck!
    Thanks!
