TPA2011D1: Unexpected Failures

I have a customer who is seeing failures when he runs tests that short the outputs to either GND or to other output. The data sheet indicates that the TPA2011 should not encounter these issues and should be able to withstand a short to GND or to the other output. The only difference I have noted in looking at this issue with the customer is that the failures seem to be when the customer has an additional LC filter attached to the output. When he uses a ferrite beads and a 1nf cap vs. an LC type filter the failures do not occur. Are the failures related to the additional circuitry? Is the device designed to be able to withstand a short and restart without damaging the part?

  • Hi Richard,

    You should take into account that TPA2011D1 may be damaged if it works beyond the given specs in the amplifier's datasheet, even if the device has short-circuit protection. Perhaps the LC filter is causing a condition that damage the device.
    The device has an auto-recovering short-circuit protection, it means that the device should be able to withstand a short and restart without damaging itself.

    So using the filter would not be a cause of the failure?
    I am a little confused here as the data sheet seems to imply that a short-circuit will not damage the part and it will be able to restart and operate properly again. This is not the case with my customer. The part fails and it does not recover. If it is not because of the external filter, what is actually causing the failures?
    A short circuit by definition will be beyond the data sheet parameters. Can you explain what you mean by exceeding the given specifications of the device? Are you saying if the short circuit exceeds the maximum current level then the part can be damaged? This does not seem to be a good explanation because a short circuit often exceeds the capability of the part. Please explain what you mean in detail so that I can explain this to the customer.

    I am not sure what is going on. When the short-circuit event happens, is that device damaged? or, Doesn't the auto-recovering feature work?
    On the other hand, you could provide me a customer's circuit schematic and the part numbers of the components used in the filters in order to review them in order to search if something is wrong.
