PCM3168A: Switching between analog and I2S audio to ouput single I2S

Part Number: PCM3168A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3204, TLV320AIC3268

Hello,

I'm trying to find a way to switch between different audio sources and output I2S. So my idea is that I have multiple audio sources (analog) and one I2S source and I want to switch between them and afterwards output them as I2S. You may ask yourself why in the world I would input I2S and output I2S, but this is only because I want to have single chip switcher (aka use no mux for the I2S signals). So far I found the PCM3186A and initially I though that this might be the chip for me, but then after reading its datasheet I'm not quite sure that it will work for me. My question is: Can the PCM3168A can be used for my task? Is it actually possible to switch between the ADC and I2S input and output the selected signal through the output I2S?

Regards,

DK

  • Hi, Deyan,

Welcome to E2E, Thanks for your interest in our products!.

Unfortunately, the PCM3168A can't be used for the application you are requesting. The ADC input is tied directly to the I²S output, and the I²S input of the device is directly tied to the DACs of the codec. There is no way of connecting internally the digital input to the digital output.

We have other codecs, like TLV320AIC3204, which have a loopback functionality, which consists in routing internally the digital input to the digital output of the I²S bus, I would recommend you to take a look to this part and see if is suitable for your application.

  • Hello, Diego,

Thank you for your fast answer! Actually the part you suggested is going to be suitable, but I'd rather use TLV320AIC3268, because of the more analog inputs and in first glance it looks more of the part I was looking for. So thank you very much for helping me figure this out!
