2 USB-MODEVM driver issues

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320AIC3104EVM-K, TLV320AIC3104

I have 2 issues of equal importance that I could really use some help with regarding USB-MODEVM interface drivers (both are in reference to the TLV320AIC3xEVM-PDK):

Issue 1:

Installing the USB-MODEVM drivers on a Windows 7 / Vista platform to fulfill an upcoming requirement.  I've tried d/l'ing and installing the USBfirmwareV0203.zip found in this forum, and they did not work, or I'm doing something wrong.  I've poked around a bit and can't seem to locate anything else right now, so I'm sort of stuck.  All I need is the USB-MODEVM communication with a host PC, I have an already working board+app which uses this USB communication with a host PC running XP.   When I attempt to hook this system to the Vista machine (stand-in for Win 7), it asks for location of the drivers.  I point it to the unzipped folder contents of the above mentioned zip and it still says the drivers were not installed correctly.

Any help would be appreciated - I'm guessing it is something very simple/basic that I am missing or doing incorrectly.

Issue 2:

I have two laptops which I'd like to have these drivers installed on working on for Win XP.  On one of the laptops, the drivers install correctly.  I can see that the device appears Device Manager as both an NI-VISA USB Device (USB-MODEVM) and a Sound, Video, and Game controller (USB Audio).  I have a board+application that uses the USB-MODEVM drivers to communicate with this host PC and it works flawlessly.

On the 2nd laptop, the drivers fail to install correctly.  Both laptops are identical in hardware/build.

There are two parts of the driver install.  On the laptop that I am having a problem with, the first portion (NI-VISA USB Device) installs correctly, but the 2nd portion, the actual USB Audio portion, does not.  Correspondingly, when I go to Control Panel - Sounds - it does not enumerate in the list of audio devices.  I can verify this by checking, I get a yellow exclamation mark and a code 28 for uninstalled drivers.
As a reference, I've been using the .pdf document titled

TLV320AIC3xEVM-PDK Series Troubleshooting Guide

authored by J Arbona as a guide through this.  I've followed all of the very helpful suggestions in that document, (I'd have been utterly lost without it!) but my system still can't get past the very last install step (in the document referenced above, section 3.2 Device Driver Setup, steps 4-6).  I am guessing I have a conflict somewhere along the way in the install process, but I don't know where to look to try and track it down.

Again, any help would be much appreciated.

  • Hello Rob,

The AIC3x and AIC310x EVM-K series currently are not supported under a Windows Vista/7 environment.

If you would like, you could use the GUI software of another device to communicate to the AIC3x using the command-line interface.

The AIC3254EVM-U CS http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/tlv320aic3254evm-u.html has the EEPROM programming utility. Once installed, go to "Tools > EEPROM Writer" where you can find a tab that explains how to use the DFUTEST.exe program. That software includes v2.03 firmware which is compatible with Windows Vista/7. However, you will not be able to communicate with the AIC3x GUI if you upgrade to v2.03.

The v2.03 firmware does not use the NI-VISA driver. The device enumerates as a standard HID and USB Audio class devices. The AIC3254EVM-U CS will use the HID interface to communicate register data to the EVM.

Attached is the firmware image to restore back to the factory USB-MODEVM V0105 used by AIC3x in case you would like to roll back.

    Regards,

    J-

    Dear all,

I have applied AIC33 EVM now, is also not supported Win7 environment???

If yes, how to solve this issue?

  • HI Chen,

It is now supported in Win7. You can find the driver here: http://www.ti.com/litv/zip/slac521.

  • Hi J

I've downloaded and installed the driver from the slac521.ZIP file several times on my windows 7 system.  The driver appears to load OK when I look in the hardware devices control panel. However, when I launch the application AIC310x and then select the device (AIC3104, on the TLV320AIC3104EVM-K), I get an error dialog saying:

    "Connect USB"  <Retry> <Exit>

I've tried several USB ports with no luck.

Is this Win 7 driver known to work?

    Thanks,

    Bjarne

  • Make sure you also have the latest version of the GUI which can be downloaded here:

    http://www.ti.com/tool/tlv320aic3104evm-k

The version on the CD has a bug.

  • Thanks - yes, I have tried the downloaded GUI application and the downloaded driver.  Still no luck.

  • Am having the same issues with the newest software. Still need to run the setup in XP compatibility mode or I get an error saying "the windows installer engine is corrupt". The AIC310x.exe application gives just a message box that says "Connect USB" with Retry and Exit. Has this issue been resolved yet?

  • I have the same problem with win7 64bit.

  • Hello,
I had similar problems using the TLV320AIC3104 EVM under Windows 7 SP1 64 bit.
After installing the latest revision GUI (SW evaluation tool), I got the message "Connect USB" .

This happened also after installing the USB MODEVM windows7 drivers named slac521.

The problem is related to the NI VISA 4.0 runtime that are not fully working in windows 7.
I solved uninstalling both the GUI and the NI VISA 4.0 runtime drivers, and then installing the newer NI VISA 14.1 drivers, compatible with WIN7.
Finally I reinstalled the GUI and everything worked ok, without any error messages.

To be honest, I spent a lot of time installing tons of NI pieces of SW: Labview runtime engines, Labview 2014 demo, NI Measurement Explore and so on, before getting to the definitive solution.

By the way, I did't need to make any tweak with the EVM firmware.

I hope this works for the other users.

    Best Regards,

    Lucio

  • Hi Lucio,

    Thanks for you findings!

Yes, the newest NI-VISA is needed. This is explained in page 5 of www.ti.com/.../slau218.

  • Please help!  I've followed about everything in this post, installed everything (including the kitchen sink), and I cannot get my computer to recognize and/or find the driver(s) to use the TLV320AIC310XEVM-K with the USB-MODEVM on my computer.  I have the NI VISA program installed (15.0.1), the latest GUI (not the one on the disk), and although the program opens up, it cannot connect to the USB-MODEVM board and it still shows as an Unknown Device in the Device Manager.  I try to have the computer install/look for the driver, but I have been unsuccessful in all of my attempts.  Is there someone who can help me?  Can someone just send me the driver I need?

    Frustrated,

    Matthew

  • Hi, Matthew,

I will try to guide you step-by-step in order to find the mistake.

    1. Download the TLV320AIC310xEVM GUI: http://www.ti.com/lit/zip/slac249.
    2. Then, run the setup file in order to install the GUI. If you have problems to install it, please try with the troubleshoot compatibility option.
    3. Make sure that the TLV320AIC310xEVM and the USB-MODEVM INTERFACE have all the jumpers on the default position. Please, consult the EVM User's Guide for more information.
    4. Connect the EVM to the PC.
    5. Open the computer manager in order to review if the device has been recognized or not.
    6. If not, download the NI-VISA drivers. Select the device and install the drivers.

The device should be recognized once the GUI is opened. Could you try again with these steps, please? If the problem persists, please let me know.

    Best regards,
    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.

  • Thanks Luis Fernando Rodriguez S.,

You know what it turned out to be?  The jumpers were all over the place (when comparing to the User Guide specific to the TLV320AIC3104EVM module).  After fixing the jumpers, the USB-MODEVM installed correctly.

Thank you again for your help,

    Matthew

  • Latest massive NI-VISA package. slac521 driver will not install, not signed under Windows 10. What am I missing?
  • Hi, Michael,

Welcome to E2E and thank you for your interest in our products!

There's an option on windows 10 which can be used to install unsigned drivers. Look at the "Update & recovery" menu of PC settings. There will be an option called "Advanced startup". Click at the "Restart now" button on this section. There will be a new menu with the "Troubleshoot" option. Click on the "Advanced options" menu and then on the "Startup Settings". Finally, there will be an option to disable the driver signature enforcement.

This configuration must be applied before the step 6 that I mentioned before (If not, download the NI-VISA drivers. Select the device and install the drivers).

Please let me know if the problem persists.

    Best regards,
    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.
  • I had disabled driver signing at the command line, but your approach worked.

I was still required to run the GUI in XP SP2 compatibility mode.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
