TAS2521: TAS2521EVM

Part Number: TAS2521

We used TAS2521 EVM board to test the chip.

We have one issue when the volume goes high:

The register in 0x2D  page on page 1 (Speaker Amplifier Control 1) goes automaticaly to value 0x00 spk driver is powered down .

What could be the cause,  how can we correct this issue.

This is happened with this differents speaker, at different level.

  • Hi Jocelyn,

    The device is most likely protecting itself from a short/overcurrent event. What are the speaker impedance that you're using?
    If output drive is high and load impedance is low the device could go into overcurrent.

  • Ok,

    We are using 4 ohms speakers , adding 1 ohms in serial on speaker lines seems to fixe the issue.

    Do you have some recommandation to add RC filter or LC  on the speaker line for 4 ohms speakers  to protect the amplifier?

    The documentation speak about HP over current register but not Speaker over current ?

  • The filter suggestions for other low power Class-D amps (like TPA20xxD1 family) can also be used for TAS2521. You can also take a look at the following document about Class-D output filters: proddms.itg.ti.com/.../sloa119b.pdf
    The over current protection is enabled all the time on the speaker outputs, and it disables the outputs when the over current event happens; it does not limit the current like the HP output.
    The only indicator of an over current event is on Page 1 Register 0x2D bit 1. This bit is cleared when the device goes into protection, to re-enable the speaker output after an over current event this bit must be toggled back to '1'.
