TPA3244: Driving Complex Loads

This is a general TPA32xx question.

If driving a complex load, will the TPA32xx family have any difficulties, as long as the driving voltage is within range of the rails, and if the driving current is kept below the I_OC specification of the part?

Or, to put it another way, will there be any issues if TPA32xx is producing Apparent power (mix of real and reactive power), assuming that the peak output voltage and peak output currents are within the part specifications?

what kind of complex load are your driving? A complex load like a loudspeaker?

Kai,

Think transformer, matching network, and piezoelectric element. The impedance can present as inductive or capacitive, depending on frequency and the matching network.

Hi Evan,

Yes if you stay within the bounds of recommended operating conditions, including a minimum impedance of the load, and the minimum inductance of the output network, there shouldn't be any issues.

A follow-up. Does the PVDD power supply need to be able only to supply the real power delivered to the load, since any reactive power would be supplied by the PVDD bulk capacitors? Or would the PVDD power supply need to be sized to provide the maximum output current required?

Hi Evan,

You should design the power supply to support the real power to the load. There of course will be losses through the device and the inductor due to DCR, so there should be some wiggle room. I think the only time that the reactive power will pull on the supply will be at startup, which I would assume you are not going to be pushing power to the load at startup, but even so the PVDD caps should help with that if necessary.
