Replacement for NEC 4570 op amp

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA1612

I have a Tascam BR-20 reel to reel tape recorder. I would like to replace 12 NEC 4570 opamps in the audio path with a more recently designed chip that is audiophile/professional audio oriented. I thought that the TI 1612 would be a suitable replacement, but apparently it is not available in DIP 8 format. Could someone please recommend a suitable replacement for the NEC 4570. Thank you.

  • Hi Tiny,

it's always difficult to recommend an OPAmp as a direct replacement without knowing the original circuit. Many of the parameters can be important, not only the "audio" performance. For instance, the OPA1612 is a 40MHz OPAmp. The UPC4570 can only 7MHz. Is the layout and the decoupling measures sufficient to handle a 40MHz OPamp? Or see the maximum differential input voltage. The UPC4570 can withstand +/-30V. The OPA1612 has back to back protection diodes between the inputs and can withstand higher differential voltages only with additional current limiting resistors.

Also, your device is a tape recorder and magnetic audio tapes are well-known for their huge distortion which is decades higher than what you get from an OPAmp.

Could you provide me more details about your application?
I need more details to recommend you a right device.

  • Hi Tiny,

I haven't heard back from you. I am assuming that you were able to resolve your issue. If no, just reply this post with further information or create a new one if this was locked by time-out.
