TPA3220: Rating of BST Capacitor for TPA3220

Part Number: TPA3220

Dear Sirs,

My customer asked us about rating of BST Capacitor for TPA3220.

In the data sheet of tpa3220, there is described as Rating of the BST CAPACITOR recommended a 33 nF / 50V X7R.

Please let me know why this 50V rating is recommended.(Why 50V rating is necessary?)

In Userguide, a rated voltage capacitor of 25 V is used.

Please also let me know about the difference in rated voltage.(Why is EVM rated at 25V instead of 50V?)

Best Regards,

Y.Hasebe

  • Dear Sirs,

    I have one more question.
Please let me know the minimum rated voltage of the boststrap capacitor.

    Best Regards,
    Y.Hasebe
  • Hi Yoshiki,

Sorry for the delay in response. The datasheet for the TPA3220 recommending 50V voltage rating is actually incorrect. I actually thought we had already corrected this, so thanks for pointing this out to us. We will be sure to update it.

Now for the minimum voltage of the bootstrap caps, this is the voltage difference across the capacitor.  In this case it is 5V but ceramic capacitors lose quite a bit of their capacitance the closer you get to their voltage limit. To be safe I would recommend going with at minimum 16V or higher voltage rating.

    Best Regards,
