Audio amplifier class in portable device?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA2010D1

Hi all,

I'm new to the audio field.  I have a few questions about audio in portable devices and phones.

1. What amplifier class they are? A, AB, or D?

2. How stereo signals are combined and output audio to mono speaker.

3. What are power and frequency range of the speaker.

Thanks,

txnghia

  • Hi, txnghia,

Welcome to the wonderful world of audio!

    1. Most prevalent in portable applications is class-D due to the power savings they bring. Using a class-D power amp extends battery life up to 2.3 times longer than using a class-AB amp under the same conditions. Class-A has terrible efficiency, so it is never used in portable applications, and very rarely used as a power amp in any application.

    2. You can mix them at the inputs. Many of our data sheets show reference schematics to do this.

    3. Typically around 0.5W and 150ish to 20k for mobile cell phones. The small size limits the low-frequency response of your typical mobile phone speaker.

I suggest you take a look at the TPA2010D1 d/s, it has a ton of great info in the apps section.
