Current sensing circuitry to detect speaker failure

Hello

In our design we are using an audio amplifier supporting output from 1W to 4W. To monitor if speaker is working or not we are planning to use current sensing devices. Kindly suggest us what would be the best approach for this.

Note: Audio amplifier operating voltage : 3-5V, Speaker impedance 3-10 ohms(We planned to test different speakers supporting the wattage.

  • Hello Nidhi,

Thanks for considering to use Texas Instruments.  I believe using a current shunt monitor would be suitable for your application.  According to your specifications above, I expect your max current to be sqrt(4W/3ohm)=1.155A.  For the most measurement resolution, I would power your current shunt monitor with 5V, which the monitor output will match closely to.  From this you determine a gain value you may want to use.  To calculate this, you do: output Voltage/(max Vshunt)= ~5v/(1.155A*3ohms).   Based of these values and the specifications you mentioned above, I believe you could filter through our product search and find devices that meet your need, and you can decide if you want to trade off higher accuracy for cheaper cost.  Our product search can be found here.  When you select a product and go to its respective page, you will pull up a error calculation tool which can help decide your selection.  If you need additional information on current shunt monitors, you can watch our training series here:
