TAS5760M: 2ohm BTL

Part Number: TAS5760M

Hi Team,

My customer would like to know if they can run the TAS5760M in BTL with a 2ohm speaker as detailed below. The datasheet specifies a minimum impedance of 4ohms for this configuration. Can you please confirm if this would be possible?:

"The IC isn’t specifically rated for BTL mode below 4 ohms, but it might work.  The overcurrent protection turns on at 7A.  Based on the power vs PVDD voltage curves, the amp can do approximately 19WRMS @ 10% THD, 4 ohms.  That’s about 8.7VRMS = 12.3Vpk.  Using a maximum of 7A and 8.7VRMS:

2 ohm BTL – 98W peak, 49WRMS by peak current, 38WRMS at 10% THD clipping

3 ohm BTL – 147W peak, 49WRMS by peak current, 25WRMS at 10% THD clipping

4 ohm BTL – 196W peak, 392WRMS by peak current, 19WRMS at 10% THD clipping

From the above it looks like the IC could possibly run at 2 ohms BTL with a 12VDC supply.  The 12V PBTL curves show it delivering about 37WRMS at 2 ohms at 10% THD, which is basically what I estimated for the 12V 2 ohm BTL mode.  Is there some other reason why 12V 2 ohm BTL would not work?"

Thanks,

Antonio

  • Hi Antonio,
Technically 2Ohm loads can be used for BTL mode as long as the output current is below OC THR. But you need to know that the power efficiency is lower with lower load. So the thermal performance could be an issue for the high output power from AMP. I don't think there is any problem in the low output power application with 2Ohm load in BTL mode.
