TPA6120A2: How to control the volume in TPA6120A2 Headphone Amplifier

Part Number: TPA6120A2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA2134

Hello sir,

I am using  TPA6120A2 Headphone Amplifier in one of my project.

Audio input taken from computer.

Input audio signal given toTPA6120A2 Headphone Amplifier through Integrator circuit ( using OPA2134UA as a LPF filter ).

Our requirement:-

1. Whether TPA6120A2 Headphone amplifier can drive 16Ω TO 300Ω headphone impedance?

2. How to control Volume in this circuit?

I am attaching the TPA6120A2 Headphone Amplifier schematic pdf for your reference.

Let me know if any change require in this schematic

  • Lakshmanan,

    1. TPA6120A2 is able to drive 16 to 300 ohm loads, some of the typical characteristics are taken with loads up to 10kohm.
    2. The gain of TPA6120A2 is set by Input and Feedback resistors, like most analog amplifiers. There is some helpful information on how to select these resistor values on the data sheet at section 10.2.1.2.1: www.ti.com/.../tpa6120a2.pdf

The easiest way is to assume that the input is driven by a low impedance, so you can just have each input go to the top of each part of a ganged 10kΩ audio-taper pot, the bottoms of the pots are grounded, and the wipers feeds your OPA2134s (through a DC blocking cap).

Perhaps you should use another OPA2134 as a buffer, in a non-inverting configuration, after the pot.
