TPA6120A2: TPA6120A2 as a line-driver? Instead of headphone amp?

Part Number: TPA6120A2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM5242, TPA6139A2, TPA6138A2, DRV612, DRV632, , TPA6130A2, TPA6140A2
Is this part OK as a "line output" for driving a "line input" on a receiver for example? I am designing a DAC (with PCM5242) and I want to be able to drive headphones, but I also want to be sure it can also connect to a standard amp system (Single ended) without causing any trouble. Would this be a decent solution for this?
  • Hi Jay,

    What are your output requirements?
Perhaps TPA6138A2 or TPA6139A2 could be better options. These devices have their line driver versión DRV632 and DRV612 respectively and also these have internal charge pump to generate negative rail from positive voltaje supply.

  • Hello Ivan,

Thank you for your prompt response.

    "What are your output requirements?"

The product should be connected one of two things. 1) Line receiver such as an amplifier or receiver. or 2) headphones like ear buds or DJ headphones. Is there a good compromise to achieve both in the same output?

Perhaps TPA6138A2 or TPA6139A2 could be better options. These devices have their line driver versión DRV632 and DRV612 respectively and also these have internal charge pump to generate negative rail from positive voltaje supply.

We cam across the TPA6120A2 from the PCM5242 datasheet but I'm really happy to hear about the TPA6138A2 or TPA6139A2. Without looking too hard (yet) I'm wondering if the DRV632 and DRV612 are pin compatible with the TPA6138A2 or TPA6139A2?

    Thanks again.

    Jay

  • Jay,

Yes TPA6138A2 and TPA6139A2 are pin to pin compatible with DRV632 and DRV612.
These devices have the advantage that can be supplied by single positive supply, instead of double supply like TPA6120A2.
Although TPA6120A2 advantage is that it can be supplied with higher supply voltages thus can drive bigger loads, while TPA6138/9 are pusposed for 16 to 32 ohm loads.

  • I also stumbled on the TPA6130A2. This looks like a perfect companion to the PCM5242. Do you agree?

Looks like the TPA6140A2 is also available, but only in WCSP. Are there any major reasons to switch from the TPA6130A2 to the TPA6140A2?

Thanks again, your answers have helped to resolve this issue.
