PCM9211: Audio from HDMI Version 2.1 "how to interface eARC signals with PCM9211" according to your technical note SBAA300A–July 2018

Part Number: PCM9211

Ravi,

This a quote from the above technical note sbaa300a page 1.

"Digital interface Receiver (DIR) supports TWO inputs w. integrated coaxial amplifiers. This allows direct connection to HDMI eARC source OR coaxial input S/PDIF source as highlighted in Figure 2."

This a quote from the above technical note sbaa300a page 2.

"Summary

PCM9211 Digital Interface Receiver is fully compatible with handling eARC frames, making the audio device to function seamlessly with newer HDMI 2.1 devices to be released in coming years"

"To interface the PCM9211 with ARC source (for example: eARC TX capable TV), please refer to following pin connection -"

HDMI Pinout                                                                PCM9211 Inputs
Pin        # Description                          Pin #                            Description                  Pin # Name Description
Pin 14     HEAC+                                 Pin 37/35                     RXIN0/ RXIN1            Biphase signal, input 0/1,
Pin 17 GND (ARC)                              Pin 38 GNDRX                                             buil t-in coaxial amplifie r
                                                                                                                                    Ground for RXIN

The above pin connections shown in your technical note indicates that the audio signal is in SPDIF format on Pin 14 which can be connected to the PCM9211 (Never mind the RIXN inputs, I can connect it to other inputs).

Does this mean the PCM9211 can decode the audio signal in SPDIF format from the HDMI pins to I2S output from the PCM9211? Can you please clarify? What above the SPIDF clock speed in the HDMI eARC?

John.

  • Hi John,

The PCM9211 can support HDMI 1.4 ARC signal to be converted to I2S stream but as far as the full-speed of HDMI eARC is concerned, it will not be able to handle full speed clock rates. In addition, we will require DIFF-to-SE conversion external to PCM9211 as the DIR has only SE inputs.

    Thanks.

    Best regards,
    Ravi

  • Ravi,

    Thanks for your reply.

This is a quote from page 2 of the technical note SBAA300A.

    "Summary
PCM9211 Digital Interface Receiver is fully compatible with handling eARC frames, making the audio device to function seamlessly with newer HDMI 2.1 devices to be released in coming years."

Your statement seems to contradict the above quote from the technical note. Does it mean that the technical note SBAA300A is incorrect?

I think electrically the PCM9211 can be connected to the relevant pins on the HDMI interface with differential or single ended inputs as the case may be, but the audio received on the eARC frames on the HDMI2.1 should be below 192 KHz. Am I right?

    Regards,

    John.
