PCM1792A: Differences and Evaluation Board

Part Number: PCM1792A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1792, PCM1794, PCM1794A

Hi,

I was hoping someone could answer me the following two questions:

1. What is the difference between the PCM1792ADB, PCM1792ADBG4 and PCM1792ADBR except the carrier (if there is one).

2. Is there an evalution board for the PCM1792A. I have only found the DEM-PCM1792. But I think that has the PCM1792 chip (without the 'A'). Or are these chips the same?

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

Regards

Kiran

  • Hi Kiran,

The only difference between the PCM1792ADB and DBR is the packaging (tube vs tape and reel). I have spoken to our quality team about the "G4" package, and apparently that suffix was used to indicated when the device was converted to Green/RoHS compliance. I think it is a bug on the site, the G4 is no-stock and is not orderable. The PCM1792ADB and PCM1792ADBR are the only current orderables, and both are RoHS compliant. We are working on getting the G4 removed.

The EVM was discontinued a while ago. My team is working on replacing them, but probably will not have them available until the end of the year. It is difficult to know if the EVM you found has the PCM1794 or the PCM1794A, as I do not know the version or source of the EVM. From a functional standpoint the two are the same, so evaluation can occur either way.

    Thanks,
    Paul
  • Hi Paul,

thank you for the quick response. The evaluation board is this one:

I might be able to buy one in second hand, but incase that is not possible I guess the only other option to program and test the PCM1792A is to design my own PCB? Or do you have an alternative to do so? I will be using the DAC-IC for my Masterthesis and was hoping to get familiar with it before that. Thanks again.

  • Hi Kiran,

I do not know if the device on that PCB is PCM1794A or PCM1794, it might just depend on when that exact board was manufactured. We do not have any evaluation hardware for that specific device currently.

I would suggest either getting a second hand board (though the driver/control interface may be too dated to use easily), design a PCB, or look at some of the commercial or hobbyist boards that are available. This device is very popular, so there are quite a few hobbyist boards available.

    Thanks,
    Paul
  • Hi Paul,

I will do that, thank you very much.
